Red Cross seeks 40,000 more volunteers

BATON ROUGE, La. – The American Red Cross said Saturday it needs 40,000 additional volunteers in the next few weeks to replace worn-out relief workers helping Hurricane Katrina victims.

“This is a disaster of such scope and such significance that it is not going to go away in a few weeks or a few months, said Ken Degnan, public affairs specialist for the Red Cross. “We need more people.

The relief agency is sheltering 160,000 survivors, has provided 6 million meals and is operating 675 shelters in 23 U.S. states, an unprecedented effort that is taxing the 114-year-old organization, Degnan said.

The 36,000 Red Cross volunteers currently working the disaster will start rotating back to their homes beginning next week, so replacements are needed, he said.

The agency is asking recruits to contact their local Red Cross, which will provide training in such fields as shelter management, public health and working through government bureaucracies set up to assist disaster victims.

“It may seem like pretty simple to come into a shelter and help out, Degnan said. “But when you are dealing with large numbers of people in a congregate living facility you need to be trained.

Lack of sleep…those were the days

I was just thinking about my earlier years at my last college and the days of “fun.”  One week i managed to stay awake for 4 days straight and without severe consequence.  I did sleep 16 hours after that though :)

Our real citizenship

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.

-Hebrews 11:13 (New International Version)

I was reading this story about this Jewish man in the 19th century. He was one of the richest men in the world and people loved to get a sense of what it was like to be rich and look at his house. One day a group of people saw that the house was imperfect in that the trim on the house had not been finished. The rich man was asked about that and gladly answered. Jewish tradition says that every pious man Jew’s house must have some part unfinished. This was to bear testimony to the world that its occupant is, like Abraham, only a pilgrim and a stranger upon the Earth.

We love to seek money, cars, houses, jobs, clothes, etc… But will that car pass the gates of Heaven, or hell for the matter. I see almost daily signs that states the end of this life is at hand. I have Faith that any day Jesus will come for us and take us home. But are you ready? Can you answer with 100% faith that you will be going home? I hope so!

Papers, papers, and more papers

I wrote this lovely full article about school but there was a server error when i posted it and i lost it.  So the gist of what i was saying…

We spend so much money on going to college and most of our effort is spent on writing papers.  Paper after paper we write just to get a grade in return and trash the paper we worked so tirelessly on.  But the real victim here are the poor helpless trees that get cut down by the billions just for a piece of paper.

Let’s think about the trees…

Invites and more invites

I’ve gotten 30+ emails now for an invite to the exclusive club de wordpress.  Oddly enough some of the people asking are quite well known in the blogging community and even hold level 7-9 google ranking…craziness.

I’m not sure how the new invite system works exactly but from what i gather the more time you invest into WordPress.com through posting the more likely you will be getting invites.  It’s pretty cool but the anticipation of wondering if this will be the post to get me an invite is crazy.

Ah well, maybe one of the Admind will have pity on my soul and give me a few for some amazing writers to come aboard.

The downside of publicity

I’m loving the changes to WordPress but there is a down side to making a beta public.

With the recent additions of showing the top blogs on the main page of wordpress.com comes spammers.  I’ve recieved multiple comments asking for invites with a small blurb of a compliment on whatever the post me be talking about.  Sad.
